If you're starting a shrimp tank, the two most important goals are: creating a stable environment and fully cycling the tank before adding shrimp. Shrimp, especially freshwater species like Neocaridina davidi, are much less tolerant of unstable water conditions than many fish.
Here's a straightforward setup process:
1. Choose the tank
A 5–10 gallon (20–40 L) tank is a good starting size.
Larger tanks are generally more stable and easier to maintain.
2. Add substrate
For beginner shrimp, an inert gravel or sand works well.
For species like Caridina cantonensis, many hobbyists use an active buffering substrate that helps maintain a lower pH.
3. Install equipment
Sponge filter (ideal because it won't suck up baby shrimp)
Air pump (for the sponge filter)
Heater if your room drops below the shrimp's preferred temperature
Light for live plants
4. Plant the tank
Plants provide hiding places, improve water quality, and grow biofilm that shrimp graze on. Good beginner choices include:
Java Moss
Anubias
Java Fern
Floating plants
Adding driftwood or rocks also increases surface area for beneficial bacteria.
Cycling the tank
Cycling establishes colonies of beneficial bacteria that convert toxic waste into less harmful compounds.
The nitrogen cycle works like this:
Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate
Ammonia is highly toxic.
Beneficial bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite.
Another group of bacteria converts nitrite into nitrate.
Nitrate is controlled with water changes and plant growth.
Fishless cycling
Fill the tank with dechlorinated water.
Start the filter and heater.
Add an ammonia source (pure ammonia or fish food).
Test the water regularly.
You'll typically observe:
Ammonia rises.
Nitrite appears.
Nitrite falls.
Nitrate rises.
The tank is considered cycled when it can process about 2 ppm of ammonia to 0 ppm ammonia and 0 ppm nitrite within 24 hours, leaving only nitrate.
This process usually takes 3–6 weeks, though using established filter media or bottled beneficial bacteria may shorten it.
Before adding shrimp
Check that:
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: preferably below 20 ppm
Temperature is stable.
pH is appropriate for your shrimp species.
GH and KH match the needs of the shrimp you plan to keep.
Acclimation
Shrimp are sensitive to sudden changes in water chemistry. A drip acclimation over 1–2 hours helps them adjust gradually before release into the tank.
Feeding
Feed sparingly:
Shrimp pellets
Algae wafers
Blanched vegetables (such as zucchini or spinach)
Natural biofilm in the aquarium
Overfeeding is one of the quickest ways to degrade water quality.
Ongoing maintenance
Perform 10–20% weekly water changes using dechlorinated water.
Clean the sponge filter gently in removed tank water, not under tap water.
Test water parameters periodically.
Avoid rapid changes in temperature or water chemistry.
With a mature, planted aquarium and stable water parameters, shrimp will often begin breeding naturally, and baby shrimp will have a much higher survival rate thanks to the biofilm and plant cover.
